‘Fostering the Next Generation of Climate Adaptation Leaders’
Led by Dr. Johanna Nalau and Dr. Eric Chu

Please note that the workshop is open only to registered participants of Adaptation Futures 2020.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 DEC 2019
ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION: 15 JAN 2020

Aim: This workshop is designed for Early Career Scholars and Practitioners who work and research on climate change adaptation to develop stronger peer and professional networks prior to the main Adaptation Futures 2020 conference. The Early Career Workshop will run the day before the main conference, on Monday, 27th April 2020, and will be held at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The event will focus on strengthening the capacity of the next generation of scholars and practitioners to tackle emerging issues in climate change adaptation across the global North and South.

The Early Career Workshop will include a series of short presentations as well as interactive activities to facilitate feedback on ongoing research as well as co-creation of project ideas. Participants with posters will have an opportunity to present them over lunch. Leading adaptation scholars and practitioners will be at hand to discuss the latest trends and key gaps in adaptation research and practice. The event will also dedicate time for developing professional networks in view of future research, funding, or policy collaboration opportunities.

Workshop outputs will include a joint statement from early career researchers and practitioners to be presented at the main AF2020 plenary session, a role in jointly authoring a workshop proceedings report, as well as opportunities to design and participate in any written outputs (such as synthesis reports, journal special issues, peer review articles, or edited volumes) that emanate from the workshop discussions.

Selection Criteria: The workshop invites participation from early- and mid-career academics and practitioners, regardless of disciplinary background or country/region of origin. The workshop venue will accommodate 40 participants.

The Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by the workshop organizers based on the following criteria:

  • Fit and alignment with the overall workshop objectives.
  • The degree to which statement of interest informs an innovative perspective in adaptation research and practice.
  • Availability of resources to support workshop attendance.
  • Inclusion of diverse ideas, participant backgrounds, and regional representation.

Funding Support: AF2020 has limited travel and conference attendance grants available for participants from the global South. The conference organizers will share more information about these grants at a later date. Unfortunately, we do not have existing funds to cover travel for participants from other regions, but we are eager to work with you to find support from AF2020’s network of institutional sponsors.

Code of Practice: The workshop organizers are committed to discovery and innovation, creative and collaborative achievements, debate and critical inquiry, in an open and inclusive environment that nurtures the growth and development of all.
